Explanation of Pipe Size Terms

In pipe engineering, there are many standards and terms used to describe pipe sizes. Here are some of the most commonly used terms:

Nominal Pipe Size (NPS)
NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) is a standard measurement used to indicate the approximate outside diameter of a pipe. Despite its name, NPS does not represent an exact internal or external diameter; instead, it serves as a reference identifier. For example, NPS 2 refers to pipes with an outside diameter of approximately 2.375 inches (60.3 mm). This standard is primarily used in North America.

Application in HDPE Pipes: HDPE pipes can also be sized using NPS, which is especially useful in regions following the imperial system. For example, an HDPE pipe with NPS 2 is typically used in medium-pressure water supply networks.

Nominal Bore (NB)
NB (Nominal Bore) is another term used to denote pipe size, typically in Europe, and is essentially equivalent to NPS. It is measured in millimeters and represents the "nominal" internal diameter or bore of the pipe. Although it is called "bore," it does not indicate the actual internal diameter but serves as a standard reference.

Application in HDPE Pipes: In countries using the metric system (like in Europe), the NB size of HDPE pipes helps engineers select the right pipe more easily. For instance, an HDPE pipe with an NB of 50 refers to a pipe with an internal diameter close to 50 mm, although the wall thickness may vary.

Diameter Nominal (DN)
DN (Diameter Nominal) is a size unit commonly used in international standards, especially in countries using the metric system. It is similar to NB but usually refers to the outside diameter of the pipe, with size designations like 50, 100, 150, etc.

Application in HDPE Pipes: In international projects, the DN standard is more commonly seen. An HDPE pipe with DN 150 has an outside diameter of approximately 150 mm, which is a common reference in pipe design and selection.

Outside Diameter (OD)
OD (Outside Diameter) is the actual external diameter of a pipe, a precise physical measurement. For any pipe material, including HDPE, the OD is an important standard for determining pipe size and compatibility. The outside diameter is constant, while the internal diameter will change with varying wall thicknesses.

Application in HDPE Pipes: The OD of HDPE pipes is fixed. For example, an HDPE pipe with an OD of 160 mm will always have an outside diameter of 160 mm, regardless of the wall thickness. This consistency is important for pipe connections and fittings.

Why Are These Terms Important for HDPE Pipes?

Understanding these terms is crucial for selecting, designing, and installing HDPE pipes. HDPE pipes, known for their corrosion resistance, flexibility, and ease of installation, are widely used in various pipeline engineering fields, including municipal water supply, drainage, agricultural irrigation, and industrial fluid transportation. Knowing how to use and interpret NPS, NB, DN, and OD terms helps better plan and implement HDPE piping systems, improving engineering efficiency and reliability.
